The ReadTREAT research team presented the study “Impact of Trial-Level Annotation on Eye-Tracking Feature Extraction in Children’s Reading Assessment” at the 23rd European Conference on Eye Movements (ECEM 2026), held at Ulm University, Germany, from 30 August to 3 September 2026.
The presentation was delivered by Katarina Stekić Stojanović from the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade, on behalf of the authors Katarina Stekić Stojanović, Ivan Vajs, Tamara Papić, Anđela Šoškić, Vanja Ković, and Milica Janković.
The research examined how trial-level annotation affects the extraction of eye-tracking features in children’s reading assessment. It compared eye-tracking data before and after the identification of valid reading periods and the exclusion of invalid trials.
The findings indicate that trial-level annotation does not substantially affect results at the population level, supporting the use of unprocessed eye-tracking data for group comparisons. However, the analysis also showed that data quality can have an important effect at the individual level, particularly in personalised assessment, individual ranking, and longitudinal monitoring.
