Dr Ivan Vajs, a researcher at the Innovation Center of the School of Electrical Engineering in Belgrade, presented the paper “Eye-tracking-based personalized text-presentation support for children with reading difficulties” at the international MEDICON 2026 conference, held in Siena, Italy.
The paper presents a rule-based system that uses eye-tracking metrics to provide personalized rankings of text presentation strategies for children with reading difficulties. The system was evaluated with 23 third-grade primary school students reading in Serbian. Using an interactive application, each child selected their preferred text display settings, including font type and size, spacing, and color combinations. This was followed by a reading experiment involving different text modifications.
The results reveal substantial individual variability in preferences, with no universally optimal text display configuration. Standard formatting consistently ranked lowest, highlighting the potential benefits of adaptive text presentation.
